Yamaha MotoGP team has confirmed that Cal Crutchlow will make a wildcard entry at the Motegi circuit in Japan this year. Crutchlow is Yamaha's official factory test and development rider and retired from full-time racing at the end of the 2020 season. The Yamaha team will use the occasion to assess the performance of the M1 machine ridden by Crutchlow in the competition.
The announcement was made by Yamaha MotoGP Team Manager, Maio Meregalli, who also stated that they are pushing to increase the number of training days in Europe. Crutchlow made a comeback to MotoGP last season as a stand-in for Andrea Dovizioso and took part in six GPs, with his best-placed finish being 12th at Sepang. The move is expected to help Yamaha catch up with the European teams of Aprilia, Ducati, and KTM.
