BMW's R 1250 GS has long been hailed as one of the top adventure bikes on the market, and its successor, the R 1300 GS, is generating even more excitement. To showcase the capabilities of the new model, BMW Motorrad organized an expedition to climb Nevado Ojos del Salado, the highest active volcano in the world, with a team of experienced riders.
The team, which included BMW's Development Manager and the Test and Technical Director of tire specialist Metzeler, rode the R 1300 GS equipped with Metzeler Karoo 4 tires, renowned for their off-road performance. The bikes proved their versatility, excelling in various conditions, including twisty roads, long-distance touring, and challenging off-road terrains.
The adventure was not without its difficulties, as the riders faced extreme conditions, with temperatures dropping as low as -20ºC (-4ºF) and thinning oxygen levels at higher elevations. However, the R 1300 GS demonstrated its resilience and capability, successfully ascending the Rock Channel in just 19 hours and 22 minutes, reaching a total elevation of 6,027 meters (19,773 feet).
BMW's Development Manager, Christof Lischka, expressed his satisfaction with the expedition, stating that the R 1300 GS showcased its core competencies in off-road and adventure riding, as well as its ability to handle sporty riding on paved roads and long-distance touring. The successful climb highlighted the bike's capabilities and reinforced its position as a top contender in the adventure bike segment.
With its impressive performance and ability to tackle extreme challenges, the BMW R 1300 GS continues to solidify its reputation as one of the best adventure bikes available, offering riders the opportunity to embark on thrilling journeys both on and off the road.
