BMW Motorrad Issues Recall for R 1300 GS Due to Starter Relay Concerns

BMW Motorrad Issues Recall for R 1300 GS Due to Starter Relay Concerns

BMW Motorrad has announced a recall affecting approximately 1,582 units in the United States and around 25,000 globally of its R 1300 GS motorcycle, produced between July 14, 2023, and March 18, 2024. The recall addresses issues with the semiconductor starter relay, which may have been compromised during manufacturing due to an inadequate injection molding process.

This defect could allow moisture to enter the relay housing, leading to corrosion of internal electrical contacts. Consequently, this may result in current leakage, overheating, and potential fire hazards. BMW warns riders to be alert for signs such as the starter motor activating unexpectedly, overheating odors, or smoke.

This is not the first recall for the R 1300 GS regarding the starter relay. Previous incidents included no-start conditions and self-activating starter motors. Despite a Service Action in November 2023 and a voluntary recall in February 2024 to replace the relay's plastic cover, issues persisted.

Under the latest recall, BMW will replace the faulty starter relay with an upgraded electromagnetic version at no cost to owners, along with a necessary software update. Affected owners will be notified by mail and should contact their local BMW dealer for the remedy. While there is a 'Stop Sale' directive on new bikes, current owners can continue to ride their motorcycles. For further assistance, owners can reach BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or visit www.safercar.gov.
