2024 Honda XR650L: The Reliable Dual-Sport Adventure Motorcycle for Off-Road Enthusiasts

2024 Honda XR650L: The Reliable Dual-Sport Adventure Motorcycle for Off-Road Enthusiasts

For 31 years, the Honda XR650L has been a symbol of durability and adventure in the motorcycling world. With its bulletproof construction and affordable price tag of $6,999 MSRP, the XR650L offers riders the freedom to customize their bike to their heart's content or embark on epic journeys around the globe.

Introduced in 1993, the XR650L was born out of a prototype that impressed riders during the Cycle World Trek. Over the years, Honda has made minimal changes to this beloved model, making it a timeless classic. In 2024, the XR650L receives new graphics, replacing last year's red and black stripes with red and blue ones on the tank.

With a retail price of $6,999, the XR650L offers great value for riders seeking a simple and long-lasting dual-sport motorcycle. Its main competitors include the Suzuki DR650S, priced at $7,099, and the Kawasaki KLR650, available with or without ABS for $7,199 and $6,899, respectively.

The XR650L is equipped with a 644cc SOHC air-cooled single-cylinder engine, producing 34.05 hp and 31.42 lb.-ft. of torque. Its reliable performance is attributed to the use of a gear-driven counterbalancer, providing a smooth ride with ample torque throughout the rev range. The lack of a kickstarter may disappoint some riders, but the electric start ensures easy ignition.

Featuring a semi-double-cradle steel frame and long-travel suspension, the XR650L is built to handle both off-road trails and street riding. Its 43mm telescopic fork and fully adjustable Pro-Link Showa shock offer 11.6 inches and 11 inches of travel, respectively. With full-size off-road wheels and generous ground clearance, this motorcycle excels in off-road situations. However, its weight can be a hindrance in slow-speed maneuvers or when lifting it from a tip-over.

The XR650L comes with a dual-piston caliper and a 256mm disc up front, paired with a single-piston caliper and a 220mm disc at the rear. While not the most high-spec setup, these brakes are more than capable for the bike's intended use. Honda estimates a fuel economy of 52 mpg for the XR650L.

With its tall seat height and high footpegs for maximum ground clearance, the XR650L offers a commanding riding position. The motocross-style seat and short fuel tank allow riders to shift their weight forward for better cornering. However, the 2.8-gallon fuel tank may not be ideal for long-distance travel, and two-up riding is best reserved for emergency situations.

In line with its no-frills approach, the XR650L lacks modern rider aids and electronics, focusing on providing a straightforward riding experience. Honda offers a one-year transferable limited warranty for the XR650L, with additional coverage available through the HondaCare Protection Plan.

Honda's reputation for reliability is exemplified by the XR650L, which has been built to withstand the test of time. Whether you're a seasoned off-road rider or an adventure enthusiast looking for a reliable companion, the 2024 Honda XR650L is a dual-sport motorcycle that will not disappoint.
