Battle of the Middleweight Naked Bikes: Yamaha MT-07 vs Suzuki GSX-8S

Battle of the Middleweight Naked Bikes: Yamaha MT-07 vs Suzuki GSX-8S

The Yamaha MT-07 has long been considered the top middleweight naked bike, but with new contenders like the Suzuki GSX-8S entering the market, its reign is being challenged. The middleweight naked segment is now filled with exciting options, all vying to dethrone the MT-07. After riding both bikes and analyzing their specifications, we can compare them.

The Yamaha MT-07 features a 689cc parallel twin engine known as CP2, which is used in various Yamaha models. It has a tubular frame, double-sided swingarm, and conventional forks. While it performs well in corners and has a characterful engine with a good sound, there are some drawbacks. The suspension is firm, which can be uncomfortable on bumpy roads, and the bike feels cramped for taller riders. The overall finish is not as high-quality as some of its competitors. However, the engine delivers a gutsy performance, although it may lack the smoothness of other bikes. In town, the engine can feel slightly less refined, and adjustments to the clutch lever may be needed.

On the other hand, the Suzuki GSX-8S boasts a new tubular steel frame and a double-sided aluminum swingarm. Its 776cc parallel twin engine with a 270-degree crankshaft produces 82bhp and 60lb ft of torque. The GSX-8S stands out with its advanced electronics, including three drive modes, three traction control modes, and a quickshifter for seamless gear changes. It offers a more modern and refined riding experience compared to the Yamaha MT-07. The suspension, consisting of KYB upside-down forks at the front and preload-adjustable rear suspension, provides better comfort and stability. The engine is smoother and more refined, making the GSX-8S a quicker bike overall. It justifies its higher price tag with superior finishing and more advanced features.

While the Suzuki GSX-8S surpasses the Yamaha MT-07 in various aspects, such as suspension, refinement, and technology, there is still a place for the MT-07 in the middleweight naked bike market. The MT-07's playful nature, nimbleness, and satisfactory performance make it appealing to riders who value these characteristics. Despite facing strong competition, the MT-07 remains a contender in the segment. However, for those seeking a more modern and sophisticated riding experience, the Suzuki GSX-8S proves to be a worthy alternative with its superior features and overall performance.
