Kawasaki has finally unveiled its highly anticipated electric motorcycle range, which is scheduled to arrive in the UK market in October 2023. The lineup includes the Z e-1 and Ninja e-1 models, designed to rival 125cc motorcycles. These electric bikes will accompany Kawasaki's existing offerings, such as the Ninja 125 and Z125 with combustion engines. The Z e-1 and Ninja e-1 share a brushless electric motor that delivers a claimed peak power output of 12.1bhp. Both models feature a trellis frame, offering a sturdy and agile riding experience.
Similar to most electric two-wheelers, the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 will provide a twist-and-go experience, simplifying acceleration and providing ease of use. Riders will have the option to choose between "Road" and "Eco" riding modes, catering to their preferences and optimizing efficiency. Additionally, a reverse gear has been included to facilitate parking in congested urban areas.
The electric powertrain of these motorcycles allows for an exhilarating burst of speed through the "e-boost" option, enabling a claimed top speed of 61.5mph. During regular usage, the motor operates at a more conservative 6.7bhp, which is significantly lower than its combustion-engine counterparts. Charging the bikes is a straightforward process that involves removing the twin lithium-ion batteries, either by utilizing a docking station or connecting a cable located under the seat. However, specific range figures have not been disclosed by Kawasaki at this stage.
Kawasaki's entry into the electric motorcycle market marks a significant milestone for both Japanese and European manufacturers. Competitors for the Z e-1 and Ninja e-1 will likely include the British-built Maeving RM1S, which boasts a top speed of 65mph and a peak power of 14.1bhp, thanks to its twin battery and hub motor setup.
The prototypes of the Z e-1 and Ninja e-1 were first showcased at the 2022 Intermot trade show in Cologne, generating great anticipation among motorcycle enthusiasts. Prior to that, Kawasaki had already demonstrated two prototype models, one electric and one hybrid, before the start of the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hour endurance race earlier in the year.
During a press conference, Mr. Masaya Tsuruno, Managing Director of Kawasaki Motors Europe, expressed his enthusiasm for the prototypes, affirming that they represent the motorcycles the company intends to bring to market. He also acknowledged the global demand for carbon neutrality and emphasized Kawasaki's commitment to investing in electric vehicles while continuing to develop innovative models with internal combustion engines.
The Z e-1 and Ninja e-1 will showcase an eye-catching design with metallic silver and matte lime green finishes. They will also feature a technologically advanced TFT dash with smartphone connectivity, providing riders with essential information such as range, boost availability, and riding modes. With their compelling features and Kawasaki's established reputation, the electric motorcycle range is poised to make a significant impact in the market.
