Ron Haslam: A Legendary Motorcycle Racer and Teacher Honored with an Honorary Degree

Ron Haslam is a highly respected figure in the world of motorcycle racing, having had a successful career in Grand Prix motorcycle racing during the 1980s and early 1990s. He competed in 137 Grand Prix races, achieving three wins, 34 podium finishes, and one pole position. His racing career was characterized by his speed, precision, and skill on the track, and he was widely regarded as one of the most talented riders of his generation.

In addition to his racing career, Ron Haslam is also known for his contributions to the world of motorcycle instruction. He set up his own Ron Haslam Race School in 1996, where he provided on-track instruction to riders of all levels, from novice to expert. The school was based at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire, UK, and was renowned for the quality of its tuition.

Over a 24-year period, Ron and his team taught more than 86,000 riders at the Ron Haslam Race School. The school was a popular destination for motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world, and it was known for its rigorous training programs and personalized instruction.


In recognition of his racing career and his contributions to the Ron Haslam Race School, Ron was awarded an honorary Master of the University degree from the University of Derby. The nomination for the degree was put forward by a former pupil of the school, Nicola Drew, who is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of York. Nicola visited the school in 2019 and was impressed by Ron's teaching methods and his commitment to his students.


Ron's graduation ceremony took place on July 19, 2023, where he received the honorary degree alongside former West Indies cricketer Michael Holding. Speaking about his award, Ron expressed his pride and disbelief at receiving the degree, saying "It makes me so proud to know that we gave that much enjoyment and pleasure to people. I can’t believe it, to be honest. I’m a normal lad, and to get something like that is incredible."


Overall, Ron Haslam's career in motorcycle racing and his contributions to motorcycle instruction have made him a highly respected figure in the world of two-wheeled sports.
