Yamaha Bolt R-Spec - The Cruiser with Long-Distance Chops

Yamaha Bolt R-Spec - The Cruiser with Long-Distance Chops

A surprisingly popular long-distance motorcycle is the Yamaha Bolt R-Spec. While its bobber-inspired design leans more towards urban commuting, the internet abounds with tales of its long-distance exploits.

The 2024 Bolt R-Spec starts at $8,899 and features a torquey, air-cooled 942cc V-Twin. The engine uses fuel injection, pent-roof combustion chambers, and a 9.0:1 compression ratio to deliver up to 51 mpg. Yamaha describes the Bolt's Raven Black paint and sparse chrome as an "Urban Performance Bobber" that's "ready to customize."

For long-distance riding, popular Bolt R-Spec modifications include adding a windscreen and saddlebags. However, some riders have noted the bike's 3.4-gallon fuel tank can limit range, suggesting carrying extra fuel canisters as a precaution.

At just 542 pounds, the Bolt R-Spec may not be the obvious choice for a touring bike, but its torquey V-Twin and customizable nature have made it a surprising favorite among long-distance enthusiasts. While it may not offer the same level of comfort and amenities as some of Yamaha's dedicated touring models, the Bolt R-Spec's blend of style and performance have earned it a loyal following of riders who enjoy pushing its boundaries.
